I repainted my bedroom furniture about a year ago and searched a ton of DIY sites to see what was the best way to paint furniture and the answer I found was CHALK PAINT! I love Chalk Paint! It’s so easy to use and very hard to mess up.
So I bought a house within the past year and so I’ve been trying to save a little money by doing some DIY projects with the furniture the previous homeowner left and making them to fit my style. I have two of these wood side tables that are 100% NOT my style! So I decided to give them a face lift!
The you will need are:
- the piece of furniture you are painting (duh!)
- Murphy’s Oil Soap
- Paint Brushes
- Clean, lint free rag
- Screw Driver to take the hardware off.
- Chalk Paint in the color of your choosing. I like the Americana Decor brand you can get at Home Depot. One 8 oz. jar was plenty for this side table!
- Creme Wax
- Chalk Spray Paint in the color of your choosing (for the hardware). I like this Rust-Oleum paint.
- Fine grit sandpaper
Step 1: Remove the hardware from the piece of furniture you are working with. If there are drawers, remove them also. Clean the furniture with the Murphy’s Oil Soap. Give it a good scrub. You want to make sure all the dirt and dust are removed before painting!
Step 2: Time to paint! That’s right – there’s no other prep work! This piece took 2-3 coats so don’t try and glob the paint on. Paint your coats in a nice thin and even layer. After your first layer you will still see the wood through the paint (see below). Another good tip is to paint WITH the grain of the wood!
Step 3: Continue adding coats of paint until the surface is one solid color. Like I said, it could take 2-3 coats of paint. The good thing about chalk paint is that it also dries quickly! I was able to get all 3 coats done in one day. In between painting each coat, spray paint the hardware with the other chalk paint. If its a handle you’ll probably have to do 2 coats to get all the nooks and crannies.
Step 4: Once everything is dry its time to add a layer of wax. This is the protective coating on the furniture that will keep it looking nice! Make sure to follow the directions on the can of wax that you are using. Essentially you will take the clean rag and work the wax in a circular motion until it covers the whole piece.
Step 5: Once the piece is fully dry, you can re-attach the hardware. I suggest giving the piece a full 24 hours to dry after putting the wax on before you put anything on top!
There you go! You now have a beautiful, like-new piece of furniture!
